Aberdovey

Golf started at Aberdovey in 1886 when members of Ruck family recognised the potential of the Common for playing golf. The legend states that the origional course was laid out on natural turf using flowerpots for holes!

The links grew rapidly and the Club was constituted in 1892. The Ruck family wre highly influential in the early days – General Sir R.M. Ruck helped form the Welsh Golfing Union and became its first Secretary – whilst a nephew, Bernard Darwin (later famous for his golf writings for the Times and several books on golf) became the first Club Captain.
The course has been extended over the years to include land near the dunes for holes 12, 13 and 14 and has changed little from the 30’s whilst continuing to be as challenging as ever. Located at the mouth of the Dovey and winding a traditional route out and back, with sand dunes as sentinels and the wind as friend and foe. It is a place worth a long pilgrimage for any golfer.
